cornerofsolitude The Prologue

Posted in Reading and Writing on December 27th, 2007 by FKG

I’ve rewritten the Prologue in the Fiction section. Actually I just added to it, and maybe it’s a little crappy because I did it in 5 minutes, from the researching of the names to actually writing it up. It’s a work in progress, like everything else on this website, so I might change it or add to it when I feel like it. I really don’t have much time to do any creative writing , although I’m going to strive to as it’s part of my “New years” resolution, Har Har Har, which reminds me it’s in four days.

Noticed the names of the Gods? Most of the names are the old names from the Mesopotamian pantheon. The seven that are mentioned symbolizes seven mythological beings. Nannar is Satan, Samael is War, Adad is Jehovah the god of the Hebrews, Ninhursag is Gaea the Mother nature, Astarte and Inanna is Fate and Time respectively, and Uriel is Death.

cornerofsolitude 11th of November

Posted in History, Reading and Writing on November 11th, 2007 by FKG

Today is Remembrance day, which marks the day that the first world war ended 89 years ago. We attended a little ceremony at Monroe park just across the street from our place this morning. And as some old fella was emotionally rambling on about the war, I got to thinking “what if?” Like what if the war never happened? Would the world be where it is now?

Just imagine how the history of the world would’ve turned out if the bumbling Austrian Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand didn’t get himself killed in Sarajevo. No one would’ve had the excuse to declare war on anyone. Especially Germany who jumped at the chance to execute their Schlieffen Plan to invade France. A certain little known disgruntled Austrian born wannabe artist would never have experienced the horrors of war, humiliation of defeat and hence not formed his political party with the suspect ideology who would later become infamously known as the Nazi party.

World war 2 would never have eventuated, then their would have been no cold war, no veitnam war, no conflict between the Jews and Palestinians, no training and arming of Osama by the Americans and thus no war in the middle east, no war in Iraq and then maybe the world would be in a peaceful state today. It’s as simple as that.

But the reality is far from it. If anyone had a time machine and tried to meddle with past events, somehow history would find away to teach us the error of our ways with some unforeseen alternate eventuality. Just like in the thought provoking book I have recently read Making History, by british comedian Stephen Fry. In which the protagonist finds out the hard way, that his good intentions of preventing the existence of Adolf Hitler would actually pave the way in his place for an even more brutal dictator who makes the world into a hellish place.

cornerofsolitude Am I living in my own fantasy?

Probably, and some smartarses will say definitely. Anyway thats not what this post will be about, despite the title. You may have noticed that I’ve posted the fiction page again, yes that’s right folks, again. Because I’m thinking I may be able to make a go of it this time around. The fiction page will have the links to each chapter of the story I’m writing.

The overall title of the story is Post Modern Fantasy although each chapter will have their own because they can be read as a standalone. Each chapter will tell a different story, but is a piece of the whole Post Modern Fantasy. The reason why I called it Post Modern Fantasy is twofold, one I don’t have much of an imagination, hence I couldn’t come up with another better one. Two, this is the most important reason, is because it sounded good. I wanted to be post modern (whatever that means) so to speak, art imitating life imitating art that kind of stuff.

The first two parts of the story has been posted and ready to be read, one is a prologue and the other is the first chapter.

The prologue deals with the creation of this story’s universe. As a kid I used to be engrossed in stories (think of the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Viking myths) that told of the creation of the universe, the world and everything, and I always wanted to do one. I’m also a very big fan of Terry Pratchett and his Discworld novels, and as a kind of homage I’ve named the spirit beings after Terry’s second discworld novel, the Light fantastic, the one that got me hooked on all his stuff.

The first chapter is the beginning of what will be a series of adventure slash detective stories involving the unnamed protagonist private eye detective. Kinda like the Maltese Falcon meets Indiana Jones. I’ve written so many versions of this beginning (way back from primary school) that it was hard to decide which one to post, but I’ve finally settled on this one. It’s a good way to establish the setting of the story, which happens to be in hell.
