Eva units
Eva Unit Zero
Piloted by the “First Child” Rei Ayanami it was the first Evangelion to be successfully completed by the Gehirin Research committee after many failures. Eva Unit Zero is a prototype and is structurally less complex than Eva Units One and Two, with a single optical lens. During it’s initial activation with Rei, the Eva went berserk, and Rei sustained severe injuries. Eva Unit Zero’s body was initially coloured in the bright orange hues of a test model, but after it was destroyed by the Fifth Angel, it’s entire body was overhauled and repainted blue. It’s final mission occured during the 16th Angel’s attack.
Eva Unit One
Eva Unit One is man’s ultimate weapon against the awesome power of the Angels, and was the first Eva to be used in combat against them. Constructed under the top secret Evangelion project, Eva Unit One employs mysterious technology developed in the wake of the Second Impact, and whose body was created from the Angel Lilith and is inhabited by the soul of Shinji’s mother, Yui Ikari. Facts that may explain the Eva’s occasional unusual behavior such as activating without an entry plug, going berserk and remaining active after its operational time limit had expired, all indications that it was protecting it’s pilot the “Third Child” Shinji. Only Yui Ikari knows the true nature of the beast within the machine, and with her death, the biomechanical giant has taken on the rage of her lost soul. Because of its unique constitution, Eva Unit One became the sole substitute for Lilith as the medium for achieving Human Instrumentality once the Lance of Longinus had been lost.
Eva Unit Two
Fiery red in colour, perhaps to match the temperament of it’s pilot - the “Second Child” Asuka, it was the first “production model” Eva, it was built and tested in Germany. Designed for mass-production, it differs from Eva Units Zero and One, in a number of features, possessing one main optical lens, three sub-optical lenses, a cutter knife and blue body fluid. The development of special equipment like the D-type environment suit implies that future Evas will conform to Eva Unit Two’s standards. Asuka realised that the soul of her mother, Sohryu Kyouko Zeppelin, resides inside the very Eva she piloted.
Eva Unit Three
Eva Unit Three was built at NERV’s Second Branch in the U.S., and was shipped to Japan for the “Fourth Child” Toji Suzuhara to pilot. During activation tests, however, the Thirteenth Angel attacked and took control of the Eva, In the ensuing battle with Eva Unit One, it was heavily damaged, presumably beyond repair.
Eva Unit Four
This production model Eva was constructed at the NERV base in Nevada. Upon activation of the engine, both Eva Unit Four and the Nevada NERV base disappeared - apparently into a pocket universe known as a “Sea of Dirac.”
Eva Units Five to Thirteen
Known as the Eva Series, these nine Eva mass-production Units were built outside of NERV Headquarters and share a common configuration and colouring to each other. Because they utilise the Dummy Plug system, they are under the direct control of SEELE. Their Dummy Plugs all bear the name “Kaworu”, so appear to have been created using the thought patterns of the 17th Angel.
